A small pore on the stems of woody plants or
the trunks of trees. Lenticels are means of
gas exchange between the stem interior and
the atmosphere. They consist of loosely
packed cells with many air spaces in between,
and are easily seen on smooth-barked trees
such as cherries, where they form horizontal
lines on the trunk.
